I was attracted to this book because...

A critique friend wrote this book. The book was finished before I joined the critique group. I am reading more Christian fiction, particularly contemporary fiction. I’m always looking for good books to read.

This book was about

A Iowan family with a teenage daughter. I can’t imagine anything more difficult than mothering a teenage daughter, except also being her high school counselor. Throw into the mix a recent recognition by your peers as an outstanding counselor and trouble can’t be far away. From the moment Barrie Graeber declares “Mothering is not for cowards.” you know she is in for a ride. She works on the concepts of communication and trust are two great elements of dealing with her students and others. Barrie faces unspeakable pain in her family, making assumptions about other people lives, and combating difficult politics in her school and community. In her effort to fulfill a promise to her 4 year old daughter, Mommy would protect her from the storms, she learns to trust in something bigger.

Things I liked about this book

Kellie Coates Gilbert approaches difficult topics in our society openly and with a fresh sense of determination and hope.

Why you should read this book

Mother of Pearl is a great reminder of why we should be praying for our schools, youth and parents.

This book lived up to the back cover copy

The back cover asks ‘How far would you go for your child?’  It is a question that lingers in the back of every parent’s mind. Mother of Pearl answers exactly how far and to what detail Barrie Graeber was willing to go for hers.
