As a boomer, society encouraged the value of individual effort.
From My Way to Invictus, I was nurtured on literature which celebrated individuals efforts. Although I memorized Invictus in Freshman English, I was never comfortable saying “I’m the master of my fate and the captain of my soul.” Oh, there was deep inside of me the voice which wanted to proclaim those words with all the bravado I could muster. But, this theme goes against what I really believe, that Jesus is the Captain of my soul.
It seems to me, there is a very fine line that we must walk between the power of the individual vs a mass collective or an individual that finds greater satisfaction and meaning in joining her experiences with others to meet the challenges our world is facing.
