As always, when you are in the middle of one major crisis, there are a million of other crises.
Today, we laid to waste a member of my household for almost 15 years.
Her time with us is punctuated with very special events in my life.
I was working some long hours and my Australian Shepherd was extremely lonely. As strange as it sounds, when I went to the shelter to see about a companion for Blue, I learned that special co-worker of mine had died. It a was very surreal experience.
I picked out three dogs, I thought would work. And truthfully, Penny was my favorite. I brought Blue with me to see how he reacted to the dogs. Penny walked into the room we were in. She walked right up to Blue and literally bowed in front of him. And then, came right up into a kiss on his cheek.
While they were both fixed, that’s how their relationship went. They both took their role of protecting me and the property seriously. They were a team, when they sensed someone approaching, one would stand guard at one door and the other at another door. But it was never the same door. They did the same thing in the backyard, one at the driveway gate, one at the backdoor.
Neither of them cared for men in my house and would bark at every move a guest would make. They were also herders by nature. They didn’t like for people to be in multiple rooms, and then would try to herd everyone into the same room.
Penny would open the chain-link gate, and then go immediately to the front door, scratching to get into the house.
My Mom had been on hospice for a several weeks. At almost the same time as our caregiver noticed changes in Mom, Penny came and laid under her hospital bed directly her chest area. She laid there for almost eight hours without moving and making a noise. And again, at almost the same time we realize Mom had taken her last breath, Penny quietly moved to another room. It was something that none of us will ever forget.
We lost Blue in his sleep in 2014. Penny embraced being the protector. It was role that would not let her go on her own.
Her memory is a blessing for us.
